Topographic Map

A topographic map is a two dimensional representation of a three dimensional surface- meaning it not only portrays horizontal position, but vertical as well. It does this by using contour lines to portray relief (the shape and elevation of the land), as well as colors, symbols, labels, and other graphical representations that represent natural and man-made features. This map is a topographic map of a face of the moon and focuses on showing the differences in elevation (craters, marias), which can be identified by spacing between the contour lines. Spread out contour lines show moderate change in elevation, while clumped up contour lines show steep changes in elevation (solid lines depict above general ground level, while dashed lines represent depressed areas).
