Cartographic Animations

Cartographic animations are the compilation of 2D and 3D imagery to visualize the dynamic aspects of a phenomena (usually atmospheric). In this case, a cartographic animation of air traffic makes it more apparent to recognize patterns in the flight by observing the tiny details, such as the pattern of corridors the planes follow, and the the dispersion and distribution of planes during the morning hours (from time zone to time zone) and the middle of the night. This is distinguishable in animation, but would most likely be missed in just stills of the individual maps (since time would not be as represented).
