Flow maps show linear movement between places where the width of flow lines is proportional to quantity. This map shows the tragic fate of Napoleon's army invasion of the Russian Empire in 1812 and its subsequent retreat. The width of the flow line at the start of the march into Russia represents approximately 422,000 French soldiers. The map is superimposed on the physical location they where in Europe. As the army neared Moscow, it dwindled to 100,000 men and is represented by the shrinking width. Only ten thousand men finished the trip!
